HAPPY NEW YEAR !

Top Stories:

Sky – An Israeli air strike on a home in the Gaza strip has killed one of Hamas’ top leaders, according to security sources within the movement. Nizar Rayyan is the most senior Hamas member to die in six days of Israeli airstrikes. He was an outspoken advocate of renewing suicide bombings against the Jewish state.

ITN – Gordon Brown has warned the country that 2009 “won’t be easy” as it faces up to the economic crisis. In a New Year message the Prime Minister insisted that Britain would pull through – but admitted the challenge was “enormous”. “This coming year won’t be easy, but I am determined that this Government will be the rock of stability and fairness on which the British people can depend,” he wrote. “The scale of the challenges we face is matched by the strength of my optimism that the British people can and will rise to meet them.” Amid widespread pessimism about 2009, the premier sought to strike an optimistic note at the start of what will be a make-or-break year for the Labour government.

Guardian – Britain’s most senior civil servants are to hold formal talks with the Liberal Democrats on their plans for government as Whitehall prepares for a hung parliament in which Nick Clegg could hold the balance of power after the next election. In a departure from the Lib Dems’ practice at the last election, Clegg has agreed that members of his front bench will meet Whitehall’s permanent secretaries to discuss the party’s manifesto. The decision to hold the meetings, which are also being offered to the Tories, comes as the “golden triangle” at the top of Whitehall makes preparations for an election in which no party gains an overall majority. Opinion polls indicate that Britain may be heading for a hung parliament, the first since 1974. The failure of David Cameron to secure a decisive breakthrough in the polls after appearing to build up a lead in the summer has convinced senior figures in Whitehall to make coalition plans.

Times – Helen Suzman, the veteran South African anti-apartheid campaigner, has died today aged 91. Her daughter Frances Jowell said she died peacefully home in Johannesburg. The family plans to follow a private funeral this weekend with a public memorial in February. It is understood that Nelson Mandela, who is currently in Mozambique, means to attend. Helen Suzman had a special place in South African history, being generally recognised as the most effective parliamentary fighter against apartheid policies. For 13 years – from 1961 to 1974 – she was the sole representative in Parliament of the liberal Progressive Party, forerunner of the Democratic Party.

Sun – Pictured: Boozy Britain’s big night out. This was the state of Britain’s streets after the New Years celebrations – a drunken mess. Boozed-up revellers were left covered in blood, sick and found collapsed in a heap at the kerb.

Mail – When relatives of Dr Harold Carr were left a garage in his will, they were stunned to find what could become the world’s most expensive car parked there. Inside the run-of-the-mill garage, they found a 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante, one of only 17 made in the world. The family were shocked by the discovery, and were left open-mouthed when they were told it could be worth up to £6million at auction.

Telegraph – A man has been banned from carrying felt tip pens and spray paint in public after daubing abusive comments about women in lavatories and buses, police said. David Jell, 49, is also prohibited from displaying rude comments or nicknames of any person in a public place under the terms of his three-year Asbo.

Record – A cheeky company have hijacked cyclist Sir Chris Hoy’s name for an internet site. The Olympic legend’s management team blundered by failing to secure the web address www.sirchrishoy.com. And the site was snapped up by Glasgow firm Campbell Miller Tools. The move could cost Hoy thousands in advertising cash. Power tools suppliers CMT, based in Whiteinch, have no apparent links to the cycling sensation. But they grabbed the website the moment Hoy won his historic third gold medal in Beijing in August. Internet marketing expert Alistair Campbell said: “The potential is there for Chris to lose money if this site starts to attract internet traffic away from his own official site.
