Independent – Gordon Brown tonight promised “real help for families and businesses” to battle recession as he paved the way for tax cuts to be announced next week. The Prime Minister said “it makes sense for Government to support interest rate cuts with fiscal action” and predicted administrations across the world would shortly be following suit. But he also raised the spectre of deflation – a consistent fall in prices, sparking a recessionary spiral.

BBC – A senior social worker and police did not want Baby P returned home where he suffered severe abuse, the BBC’s Panorama has learned. It found social worker Sylvia Henry wanted him to go into foster care after he was taken to a north London hospital in 2006 with non-accidental injuries. But her bosses decided Baby P should be looked after by a family friend. Haringey Council has apologised for not doing more, but a statement disputes some of the claims made by Panorama. The Panorama show airs on BBC1 tonight at 20:30GMT.

Times – Sterling rose against the dollar in early trading today, despite forecasts by George Osborne, the Shadow Chancellor, that higher government borrowing could lead to a run on the currency. The pound recovered to $1.5007 by Monday afternoon, after closing at $1.4855 on Friday before Mr Osborne’s comments emerged in The Times that sterling was heading for “a collapse” if Gordon Brown attempted to borrow his way out of recession. Against the pound, the euro was unchanged at 0.857.

ITN – The recession will be deeper and longer than previously thought, the CBI business group has said. The CBI predicts the recession will run for almost all of 2009, with growth hit by the dramatic falls in confidence and business activity in the wake of the recent financial turmoil.
