Telegraph – The FTSE 100 jumped more than 8pc, rebounding from last week’s plunge, after the British government delivered a £37bn rescue of the country’s troubled banking system.
Mail – Gordon Brown looks set to scrap plans to extend pre-charge detention of terror suspects to 42 days if it is heavily defeated in the Lords tonight. Tory and Liberal Democrat peers and Labour rebels gave their backing to a move by crossbencher Lord Dear, a former chief inspector of constabulary, to delete the proposals from the Counter-Terrorism Bill.
Times – Army translator Daniel James was ‘Walter Mitty’ character who spied for Iran. A former army interpreter for the British commander of Nato forces in Afghanistan passed confidential information about troop movements and locations to a contact in the Iranian Embassy in Kabul, an Old Bailey trial was told today.
Independent – A political storm blew up today after the French first lady, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, admitted that she had helped to persuade her husband to block the extradition of a hunger-striking, left-wing terrorist to Italy. The Italian-born Mme Bruni-Sarkozy’s intervention, in what was already an explosive Franco-Italian political issue, is the first overt example of the “gut left-wing” First Lady and pop-singer influencing the right-wing French President.
Sky – President Robert Mugabe has sworn in two vice-presidents in a move likely to worsen Zimbabwe’s power-sharing row.

Guardian – Iraqi government fuels ‘war for oil’ theories by putting reserves up for biggest ever sale. BP, Shell and ExxonMobil are all expected to attend a meeting at the Park Lane Hotel in Mayfair with the Iraqi oil minister, Hussein al-Shahristani. Unprecedented 40bn barrels up for grabs.
Times – Andrew Sentance, a member of the Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee, today heightened hopes that another interest cut could be on the way amid forecasts that the UK had already entered a recession.
