Times – State to save HBOS and RBS. The government will launch the biggest rescue of Britain’s high-street banks tomorrow when the UK’s four biggest institutions ask for a £35 billion financial lifeline. The unprecedented move will make the government the biggest shareholder in at least two banks.
London Paper – A mother who is campaigning for justice after the rape and murder of her teenage daughter in India is being summoned to answer allegations of neglect, her lawyer has said. Fiona MacKeown believes the authorities have made a number of attempts to cover up the death of Scarlett Keeling as an accident.
Telegraph – Gordon Brown’s eyesight is causing concern among aides. The Prime Minister’s close friends have revealed that he can only see extremely large print and has needed guidance at public events. There were suggestions that if Mr Brown falls or bumps into something his damaged retina could fail and he would go blind completely.
Sky – Some bodies are not getting buried for up to two months because cash-strapped funeral directors are having to wait for the government to foot the bill, it has been claimed.

Observer – Two million Britons on the dole by Christmas. Downing Street’s desperate efforts to shore up the economy in the face of the escalating credit crash may not be enough to rescue the transport, building and car industries, as a tidal wave of job losses are predicted in the coming months.
Independent – A £516 trillion derivatives ‘time-bomb’. Not for nothing did US billionaire Warren Buffett call them the real ‘weapons of mass destruction’. It’s a market in which the lead protagonists – typically aggressive, highly educated, and now wealthy young men – have flourished in the derivatives boom. But it’s a market that is set to come to a crashing halt – the Great Unwind has begun.

Sun – The £80,000 golden gun used in a hit James Bond film has been swiped by thieves. The gun was found missing from Elstree Studios in Hertfordshire yesterday. Roger Moore starred alongside Christopher Lee in the classic 1974 Bond film, The Man With The Golden Gun.
Times – Lewis Hamilton will take a five-point lead into the penultimate race of the Formula One world championship, after finishing outside the points in the Japanese Grand Prix. Fernando Alonso secured his second successive victory with a fine performance at Fuji.
Sky – Kenyan rangers have devised a hi-tech way of saving endangered elephants – by getting the animals to send text messages. Elephants from the Ol Pejeta conservancy have been equipped with a mobile phone SIM card on their collar which automatically sends text messages if they head towards villages.
Mirror – Puss in diving boots. Super-cat Hawkeye has made quite a splash since she started the doggie paddle and took up scuba diving.
